  马西光,1932出生于山西省临猗县,祖籍山东。1948年考入中国人民解放军西北军政大学艺术学院美术部学习,1957年考入西安美术学院国画系深造,作品以人物画见常。
   他在高原生活了近四十个春秋,他熟悉高原,热爱高原。他创作的高原人物画展现出浓郁的西部风采,独特的渗透技法,动态的艺术构图,浓郁的诗情画意,蕴含着高原粗旷、奔放的激情,充满着对生活的热爱和赞美,具有鲜明的艺术风格。现为青海省优秀专家,中国美术家协会会员,中国书画函授大学教授,美协青海分会荣誉主席。曾任玄圃画院副院长,青海省政协常务委员,青海美协副主席。
   他的作品曾参加1964、1972、1979、1985年度全国美展,国画《瀚海晓月》获建国三十周年全国大展三等奖,《琴声悠悠》获“97首届欧洲中国艺术大展”金奖。1999年入选中国美协、中央电视台举办的“国画五十家”。2001年《月韵》入选百年大展。2005年国家科学技术奖励工作办公室授予其“优秀人民艺术家”称号,多幅作品被中国美术馆等收藏单位收藏。出版有《马西光画集》、《写意人物画琐谈》,并成功地在新加坡、 美国、 马来西亚、 日本等国家和我国台湾地区举办画展,被誉为“高原画派拓荒者”、“当代最具影响力的画家”。

Ma Xiguang was born in Linyi, Shanxi in 1932, his ancestral home is Shandong. He entered art department of PLA Northwest Military and Political University in 1948, and furthered his study in traditional Chinese painting department of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. He is adept at figure painting. 
He lived in plateau for almost 40 years, he is familiar with plateu and has ardent love for it.  The figure paintings he created have expressed full-bodied western presence, with unique penetrate technique, dynamic art structure and rich poetics, which implicates rugged and unconstrained passion in plateau and soulful love and admiration to life, and have unique art style. Now he held the position of Qinghai province excellent expert, member of China Artists Association, professor of China Painting and Calligraphy Correspondence College, honored president of China Artists Association in Qinghai. He was appointed vice president of Xuanpu Painting Academy, member of CPPCC standing committee of Qinghai province, and vice president of Qinghai Artists Association.
His works had joined National Art Exhibition in 1964, 1972, 1979 and 1985, traditional painting work “New Rising Moon in the Vast Ocean” got the third prize in National Exhibition for Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Founding of People’s Republic of China, “Melodious Teedle” got the golden award in the first European Chinese Art Exhibition in 1997. He was selected into “the 50 Traditional Painting Masters” held by China Artists Association and China Central Television in 1999. “Moonlight” was selected into Centennial Exhibition in 2001. He was entitled as “Excellent People’s Artist” by National Science and Technology Award Office in 2005. Many of his works have been collected by some organizations such as National Art Museum of China. “Painting Album of Ma Xiguang” “Talk about Freehand Figure Painting” were published. He held success exhibition in Singapore, America, Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan, etc. He was honored as “Pioneer of Plateau Painting” and “the Most Influential Artist in Contemporary”.

      当代著名人物画家马西光以他的高原人物画享誉画坛.他的艺术具有强烈的地方色彩、浓郁的边塞诗风、意味深长的东方文化神韵和蓬勃向上的人生情怀。他笔下的少数民族人物以及牦牛、骆驼、驴、马等动物形象。远离了悲凉、苦涩、舒缓、浑厚的情调,吟唱这块粗旷、豪放又充满雄风的土地和赞美生活在这块土地上的人们。他在青海高原生活了近40个春秋,西北高原特有的人情风物、陶瓷故乡深厚的文化传统,培养了他的艺术。他熟悉这里的土地,热爱这里的人民,他的生命与情怀,他的艺术之根已经深固地扎在高原上,因此他才能从那里汲取到不尽的灵感之源,塑造出众多的有血有肉、有情有性、生机勃勃的人物,成为西北高原上独特美的发现者,创造出高原画派豪放强劲而有秀逸妩媚的画风。
   马西光的学养深厚。既有扎实的造型能力又有传统的笔墨功夫,同时善于吸取了西方绘画的有益营养,为我所用。在他近年创作的人物画中,他从形体结构出发,以墨的团块来结构体积。不是对象的自然模仿,而是在研究对象的动态规律,掌握对象形体结构规律以及人物的个性特征的基础上,经过大胆的取舍,有目的地强化或弱化处理,以洗练的笔墨在高度概括中来表现人物的形、神、情、意。他笔下的形象是“不似之似”的,和生活中的原形有一定的差距。但又是生活中呼之欲出的人物。
    马西光不但在人物造型上追求意象造型方法,而且在画西北牦牛和其他对象时也在探索这种方法。马西光笔下的牦牛堪称一绝。他不但把握住了牦牛形体运动的特点,而且表现了牦牛的气质和奔突不羁的强悍的牛性。尤为称道的是,他把原始洞穴壁画,汉代画像和古代雕刻中的造型方法融会于自己的造型之中,在技法上又把泼墨、拓印与勾线相结合,在墨沉淋漓之中见出斑斓与古厚。由他创造的这种“拓墨皴法”,已经发展成为一种新的绘画语言。
   透过他在高原风情一系列作品中创造的一个或一组鲜活的形象,似乎可以窥见那里充满诗意和情趣的生活画卷。画面的全部魅力来自于闪现在对象的表情、动态上那种独特的美丽、纯洁、素朴、真诚的美感。画家似乎带有某些着意设计、安排的“戏剧性”效果,使富于形式美感的生活场景的描绘和人物合为一个浑然的整体。从人物的神情动态扩展到整个画面,增强了作品的整体表现力和感染力。他驾驭的鸿篇巨制。整体的恢弘气势、人物的多彩多姿令人赞叹;他信手拈来的人物小品,诗意盎然,笔情墨趣跃然纸上。他的作品有种反璞归真的野趣和难以明言的精神上的震撼性与穿透力。他的创作心态是开放的,敢于大胆吸收外国现代艺术中的一些观念、精神、观察与构成方法。但他又不从外部形式去作机械地模仿。在他显示着浓厚现代文化意识的作品中。他不因追求现代性而泯灭了民族性,也不因弘扬了民族性而湮灭了创作个性。
   马西光是西北高原传统文化沃土中孕育出来的一朵具有异样香味的奇葩。
Bold and Powerful, Charming and Graceful

Contemporary renowned artist Ma Xiguang was famous for plateau figure painting. His art has a style of strong local characteristics, full-bodied frontier fortress poetry, meaningful oriental culture and vigorous life philosophy. Minority character and animals like yak, camel, donkey and horse in his paintings being far away from sadness, bitterness, leisurely and powerful, chant the vast and wild land and eulogize people there. He lives in Qinghai plateau for nearly 40 years, particular custom in northwest plateau and profound cultural tradition in ceramic hometown fostered his art. Due to his familiarity with the land and love for the people, and his life and art deep root in this plateau, he could abstract endless sources of inspiration, and created numerous vigorous, vivid and substantial characters. He found the unique beauty of northwest plateau and created a plateau painting style of bold and powerful, charming and graceful.
Ma Xiguang is well refined and educated. He has both solid modeling ability and traditional painting ability, and absorbed the abstract of western painting. His figure paintings in recent years start from the structure made from ink block, rather than imitate the subjects, he studied the dynamic patterns, and grasp the regulations of the objects’ structure and figures’ characteristics. Through bold options and strengthening or weakening treatment, he highly generalized the figures’ shape and spirit by simple ink wash. His paradox figure images have gap with live prototype but are obviously recognized.
Ma Xiguang is pursuing image modeling in figure painting and northwestern yak and other objects. Yaks he painted are extraordinary; he not only grasped the characteristics of yak’s movements but also expressed the spirit of rushing forward and toughness of yak. Most important, he blended the modeling method of primitive cave painting, portray of Han dynasty and ancient sculpture into his painting, as well as the splash-ink, rubbing and drawing the outline to his painting technique, and make his painting colorful and thick. The rubbing wrinkle method he created has become a new painting language.
Poetry and interesting life pictures appeared in his plateau figure paintings. Glamour in the paintings derived from the aesthetic of beauty, purity, naïve and sincerity in the figures’ expression and movements. He seems to utilize the designed dramatic effect to integer the life scenes and people. The extending of people’s spirit to the whole picture enhanced the overall performance and appeal of the work. His giant paintings with grand overall and colorful figures are impressive, and his figure sketch is poetry and interesting. His works have nature wild interest and unspeakable sense of empowerment. He has open mind in creation and absorbing foreign modern art, but not mechanically imitate.   
In his modernistic works, he pursued the modernity, nationality and creation personality. 
Ma Xiguang is an exotic miracle of traditional culture in northwest plateau.
